WOW! Is an understatement, having these 2 veterans of the sport go head to head in MSG is only something one could dream of.
Cerrone’s wish to be on UFC 200 didn’t pan out, but the strong statement he put on against Rick Story at UFC Vancouver has officially earned him a slot as one of the main cards on the first ever UFC event in Madison Square Garden.
Donald Cerrone has been an emerging threat in the welterweight division finishing his last 3 opponents in style at the 170lb weight class. In result of his tactician like TKO, Cerrone’s camp along with president Dana White felt that Cerrone should stay in the welterweight division, adding that he may be en route to a title shot. It now seems Cerrone is set to stay at the 170lb division, although questions were raised if he would drop back down to the lightweight division; Cerrone may have found his home.
Robbie Lawler is looking to avenge his title defeat to Tyron Woodley, and this match-up would be great for him to get his name back into the picture. There’s a lot at stake here for Lawler, and questions rise whether his chin has finally deteriorated and where his head is at. We didn’t get to see much of Lawler in the Woodley fight due to early stoppage, so it will be interesting to see how he will prepare for this fight.
In all, this fight has all the makings to be “fight of the year” potential.
